The Day Kenya died…

Kenya died at Criminals,

Kenya died at Dangerous,

Kenya died at Treason,

Kenya died at AMEN.

15th August 2022

After days of waiting, watching frozen TV screens, pacing and denting the floors, the big moment arrived. It was the moment when Kenya would know her fate for the next five years. So much can be said about this day. A lot of debate. I have argued against the church. I have argued for the church. This

On this day, Kenya died at Amen.

70%+ of the population

As youth, we will not want to talk about this, but we also have played a part. When the IEBC went out to register new voters, the target population, the youth, refused to register. They in turn did not vote. Those who were registered, some also didn’t vote. Why? Because what then? It is a classic case of same monkeys different forests. Nothing changes. And for that, I understand. There was hope in different parts that Kenyans would go for a last-minute registration as is our culture. We didn’t.

Kenya died with our apathy.

Flooded nation

The country, the world, experienced one of the most devastating floods ever in my years of existence. Rains ravaged Kenya since March during some of the most catastrophic weather events in the country for year. Lives and livelihoods were lost in immeasurable ways. As crushing as this is, this is not when Kenya died. Kenya died when lives saved were directly proportional to social status.

Kenya drowned.

Amnesia

The rate at which we as Kenyans forget is wanting. How easily we sanitize our leaders despite knowing all their wrong doings needs to be studied. Your Member of parliament is involved in a criminal case and because they join you in chanting, they are best suited for leadership. A regime that campaigned from the Hague is deemed the best. People who have been in leadership over 20 years brag about their consistency in parliament and we don’t even question what they have done for us. I don’t know if we just forgive or we are that good at forgetting.

Kenya died with our memory.

25th June 2024

When Kenyans begun to protest the Finance Bill 2024, it was poised as a generational issue. Young millennials and Gen Zs were at the fore front of the protests using social media as the greatest tool. This was a turning point for the country. What may have started out as anti Finance bill 2024 protests has become more than that. The most unfortunate part is that we were killed for it. We were abducted for it. We want to be silenced for it. The phrasing of the protests against impunity as a generational issue has now turned to be the weapon against a generation that chose to be fearless and tribeless.

All we asked for was an ear, but our leadership gave us spears.

Kenya died at Criminals,

Kenya died at Dangerous,

Kenya died at Treason,

Kenya died at AMEN.
